Pergolas

Add architectural interest and functional shade with a custom pergola. Perfect for covering patios, defining outdoor spaces, or creating a focal point in your yard.

Define Your Outdoor Space

A pergola transforms a plain patio or deck into something special. It creates definition, provides partial shade, and adds architectural interest that makes your outdoor area feel like an intentional room rather than just a flat space.

We build custom pergolas throughout West Metro—sized and styled to fit your property. Whether you want shade over your deck, a focal point in your garden, or a structure to support climbing plants, we design it to work with your space and your goals.

What pergolas do:

  • Create partial shade without blocking airflow
  • Define outdoor rooms and gathering spaces
  • Support climbing plants (wisteria, grapevines, roses)
  • Add architectural interest and curb appeal
  • Provide structure for lighting and fans
  • Increase property value and aesthetic appeal

Pergolas work particularly well in Minnesota because they provide sun relief without creating a hot, stuffy enclosure. You get shade from direct sun while still catching the breeze on summer days.

Design & Material Options

Attached vs. Freestanding

Attached pergolas connect to your house, creating a covered transition between indoors and out. Perfect over decks or patios adjacent to your home. We handle the ledger attachment properly and match your home’s architectural style.

Freestanding pergolas stand independently, creating a destination space in your yard. Great over fire pits, outdoor kitchens, or as garden features. We size the posts and footings to handle Minnesota wind loads.

Materials we use:

Pressure-Treated Lumber
Durable and budget-friendly. We use quality lumber, treat all cut ends, and can stain or paint to your preference.
Cost: Most affordable
Maintenance: Stain/seal every 2-3 years
Lifespan: 15-20 years

Cedar
Natural beauty and rot resistance. Weathers to attractive silver-gray or maintain with stain.
Cost: Premium (worth it for many)
Maintenance: Optional staining
Lifespan: 25-30+ years

Aluminum
Louvered top that can be opened or closed depending on conditions.
Cost: Higher initial investment but virtually maintenance-free, requiring only occasional cleaning.
Maintenance: Low-maintenance compared to wood or vinyl.
Lifespan: Lasts 20 to 30+ years with proper care.

Design styles:

  • Traditional: Classic 4-post with rafters and cross beams
  • Contemporary: Clean lines, wider rafter spacing, minimalist
  • Arched: Curved top beams for softer, elegant appearance
  • Gabled: Peaked roof structure for more coverage

Features you can add:

  • String lights or integrated lighting
  • Retractable shade fabric
  • Ceiling fans (we run electrical properly)
  • Climbing plant supports (wire or lattice)
  • Privacy screens on sides
  • Built-in benches or planters

Construction & Investment

Size and placement matter

Pergolas should feel proportional—not too small (looks awkward) or too large (overwhelms). We help determine the right size based on your patio dimensions and how you’ll use it.

Consider sun angles when placing your pergola. Where do you want shade? Morning sun vs. afternoon? We map it out during consultation so your shade falls where you need it.

Construction process:

  1. Site layout – mark post locations
  2. Install helical pier footings
  3. Install posts (typically 6×6), level and plumb
  4. Attach beams and rafters
  5. Add cross pieces for shade pattern
  6. Apply finish or leave natural
  7. Integrate electrical if adding lights/fans

What’s included:

  • Custom design for your space
  • Permit application (if required locally)
  • Helical piers properly installed
  • Quality lumber or composite materials
  • Professional construction
  • Optional features (lighting, etc.)
  • Our workmanship warranty

Timeline: Most pergolas take 3-5 days depending on size, complexity, and weather

  • Basic 10×10 pressure-treated: $5,000-$8,000
  • Mid-range 12×16 cedar with lighting: $10,000-$15,000
